Moka Pot

Definition

The moka pot, also known as a stovetop espresso maker, uses steam pressure to force hot water through coffee grounds. It produces a strong, concentrated coffee similar to espresso but at lower pressure (1-2 bars vs 9 bars for espresso). The moka pot consists of three chambers: bottom (water), middle (coffee grounds), and top (brewed coffee). It uses fine to medium-fine grind and typically brews in 5-10 minutes on the stovetop. While it doesn't produce true espresso, it creates a rich, bold coffee that works well for milk drinks and is popular in Italian households.

Common Mistakes

  • Using too fine grind (can clog the filter)
  • Filling water above the safety valve
  • Not cleaning the gasket regularly
  • Brewing on too high heat (causes bitter coffee)
  • Not preheating the water
