Arabica

Definition

Arabica (Coffea arabica) is the most popular coffee species, accounting for about 60-70% of global coffee production. It's known for its smooth, complex flavors, lower caffeine content, and higher acidity compared to Robusta. Arabica beans are more delicate, requiring specific growing conditions (higher altitude, cooler temperatures, more rainfall) and are more susceptible to pests and diseases. They typically have a sweeter, fruitier flavor profile with notes of sugar, fruit, and berries. Arabica is preferred for specialty coffee and is generally more expensive than Robusta. Most high-quality coffee shops use 100% Arabica beans.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming all Arabica tastes the same (varies greatly by origin)
  • Storing Arabica the same as Robusta (more delicate)
  • Brewing Arabica at same temperature as Robusta
  • Expecting Arabica to be always better (depends on quality and roast)
  • Not considering origin when choosing Arabica
