Pour Over

Definition

Pour-over is a manual brewing method where hot water is poured over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing gravity to pull the water through. It offers precise control over water flow, temperature, and brew time. Popular pour-over devices include the Hario V60, Kalita Wave, and Chemex. Pour-over produces a clean, bright cup of coffee that highlights origin characteristics and allows for nuanced flavor extraction. The method requires a gooseneck kettle for controlled pouring, medium-fine grind, and typically takes 3-4 minutes. It's favored by specialty coffee enthusiasts for its ability to showcase coffee's complexity and clarity.

Common Mistakes

  • Pouring too fast or inconsistently
  • Not using a gooseneck kettle (makes control difficult)
  • Skipping the bloom phase
  • Using wrong grind size (too fine or too coarse)
  • Pouring water directly on the filter instead of coffee
